CFTC Commissioner Brian Quintenz Suggests Creation of Crypto Self-Regulatory Organization
United States Commodity and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) commissioner Brian Quintenz has suggested that participants in the cryptocurrency industry should create a self-regulatory structure. Quintenz made his remarks during a Bipartisan Policy Center panel held on Feb. 12.
More precisely, Quintenz said that because of the CFTC’s lack of crypto statutory oversight capability, he suggested that crypto “platforms come together to form some type of self-regulatory structure where they can discuss, agree to, implement, and hopefully examine or audit.”
According to Quintenz, such an organization could carry out audits concerning conflicts of interest, business conduct, insider trading, redemptions, custody and liquidity.

SEC Commissioner Jackson Thinks Regulator Will Approve BTC ETF, Leaked Interview Shows
A Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund (ETF) will most likely ultimately gain approval from the United States securities regulator, according to a commissioner. The comments were reported by political journal Congressional Quarterly in a forthcoming interview leaked on Twitter on Feb. 5. Robert J. Jackson Jr., the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s only Democratic commissioner, said that despite its string of rejections of ETF applications last year, the practice will ultimately change.

Bitcoin, Altcoins Are Vulnerable to New Lows, Fundstrat Warns Clients
Cryptocurrency markets could soon hit lower lows and continue their record bear market, investment and analysis firm Fundstrat Global Advisors warned in an email quoted by Bloomberg on Feb. 6. Writing to traders, one strategist at the firm, Robert Sluymer, forecast that on the basis of current performance, there was a chance Bitcoin (BTC) and altcoin prices could dip further.

US Securities Regulator Solicits Blockchain Analytics Companies for Data Review
The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is seeking sources for blockchain data and its analysis, a statement issued by the agency revealed on Jan. 31. According to the statement, the SEC is trying to find businesses able to provide blockchain data to support its risk monitoring and compliance enforcement activity, as well as inform the commission about digital assets. Last month, the agency announced that cryptocurrencies are one of the its top examination priorities for the current year.
According to the Jan. 31 statement, the agency expressed interest in potential sources for data concerning the most popular blockchain ledgers. Other than providing the data, the companies are also required to parse the data for ease in reviewing.

SWIFT CEO Reveals Plans to Launch PoC Gateway With Blockchain Consortium R3 Tech
Major global banking payments network SWIFT has revealed it plans to launch a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) of a gateway that will allow enterprise blockchain software firm R3 to link to GPI (Global Payments Innovation) payments from their platform. Speaking at the Paris Fintech Forum on Jan. 30, CEO Gottfried Leibbrandt said SWIFT would be formally announcing its plans for a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) with R3 later today.

Insurance Giant Aetna Partners With IBM on Blockchain Network for Healthcare Industry
United States-based health insurance giant Aetna has partnered with IBM to create a blockchain network tailored to the healthcare industry, Reuters reported Jan. 24. Estimated to serve over 39 million clients globally, Aetna has reportedly issued a joint statement with IBM clarifying that the blockchain system will be designed to streamline insurance claims processing and payments, as well as manage directories. The insurance giant also recently merged with retail pharmacy and healthcare firm CVS Health Corp.

Bitcoin Approaches $3,600 Again as Top Cryptocurrencies See Gains
Wednesday, Jan. 23, most of the top 20 cryptocurrencies are seeing slight to substantial growth on the day to press time. Bitcoin is hovering near $3,600 again.
At press time, Bitcoin is up just over 1 percent on the day, trading at around $3,603. Looking at its weekly chart, the current price is just slightly lower than $3,658, the price at which Bitcoin started the week. On the month, the leading cryptocurrency is down about 10 percent from just over $4,000.
Ripple is up under half of a percent on the day, trading at around $0.317 at press time. On the weekly chart, the current price is lower than $0.33, the price at which XRP started the week — and down from $0.333, the midweek high reported on Jan. 19.
Second largest altcoin Ethereum has seen its value increase by a little over 1.5 percent over the last 24 hours. At press time, ETH is trading at $118, having started the day about one dollar lower. On the weekly chart, Ethereum’s current value is lower than $124, the price at which the coin started the week.

LSEG Technology, the technology solutions provider for the London Stock Exchange Group, has announced that its matching engine will be used to power a new Hong Kong-based digital assets exchange. The news was announced in an LSEG Technology press release Jan. 22.
